Top Three Vanentine's Power Tool Gifts

makitaLCT302wHurry up and order your gifts because Valentine's Day is this sunday! I've come up with what I deem is a spectacular list of three gifts that you can choose from for your Valentine power tool whore (I can say that because I am one). Whether you are shopping for your guy or girl, here are three snazzy looking and functional power tools that they shouldn't be without.

Numero Uno:
1. Drill/driver combo: Everyone needs one so you might as well buy one that is lightweight, cool looking, powered by a lithium ion battery and delivered in a silver case. The Makita LCT302W is a combo kit that includes a drill/driver and a impact driver AND ends up being the best bargain found online for $189. The LCT302W 10.8 volt kit features a 2-speed driver drill that delivers 200 inch-pounds of torque and weighs 1.9 pounds, a variable speed impact driver that provides 800 inch-pounds of torque and weighs 2 pounds, and an LED flashlight that runs up to 9 hours on a single charge. Throw a drill bit and screw set in the gift box too and I guarantee you'll be borrowing it from your special someone.

Irwin 10WR Vise-Grip Locking Pliers

I wanted to highlight a tool that is so basic that it is often times overlooked. Over the weekend I noticed I had misplaced my pliers and had forgotten to replace them before starting this job. A buddy of mine had a pair of the Irwin 10WR Pliers and for the most part pliers are all the same but I was very impressed with these pliers. The Irwin 10WR measures 10 and has a jaw adjustment range up to 1-7/8, locks instantly, releases quickly and adjusts to pliers action. The Irwin Locking Pliers features curved jaws, knurled tips and wire cutters are able to cut a 1/4 bolt. The involute jaw curve permits user to put tremendous pressure on four points of any style nut or bolt head.

Before my next project I am not only going to make a checklist of all the tools I need to avoid this problem but I am also going to head on over to Toolking.com to pick up a pair of the Irwin locking pliers.

Bare and Cordless

Dewalt_cd390Why would you buy a bare and cordless power tool? Yes, bare meaning no battery and cordless is well, battery powered right? Toolking.com has some great deals on bare and cordless tools. Let's say you purchased or received a DeWalt combo kit for Christmas and it is just missing the cordless circular saw that you really wanted. Well you can buy just the bare tool version of that 6-1/2 inch DeWalt DC390 factory reconditioned 18-volt cordless circular saw for only $59.

The DeWalt CD390 circular saw uses 6-1/2 inch carbide tipped blade for two times the cutting capacity at 90° and 45°. The DC390 has a lightweight magnesium shoe and upper guard that provides increased durability. The DC390 cordless circular saw also has a 0-50 degree bevel capacity that gives you additional capacity for a variety of tasks. Featuring a fan-cooled motor with replaceable brushes for maximum power and durability, the DC390 circular saw tool-only package includes the DC390 circular saw, circular saw blade and rip fence for $59. And the nice thing is that the DC390 works on both the DeWalt NiCad battery or the Li-Ion phosphate NANO battery.

DeWalt's New DWS535 Wormdrive Circular Saw

DeWalt_DWS535_wormdriveDeWalt just put out a new worm drive circular saw, the DWS535, designed for framers, concrete formers, and other professional circular saw users. This powerful wormdrive saw has some updated features that their engineers developed from the ideas that you folks gave them in the field. One that Doug over at Toolsnob.com especially liked was the Toughcord cord retention and protection system. "We assume that this is a reinforced connection between the cord and the body of the tool, which likely stemmed from the developers visiting jobsites and watching ladder-bound carpenters raise and lower their saws with the cord. We see it all the time (and have been known to do it on occasion). Now, thanks to DeWalt, you'll not only be able to comfortably hold the saw's weight with the cord, but you'll probably also be able to swing it around like a bullroarer."

DeWalt's DWS535 worm drive circular saw also features a sturdy magnesium shoe and rugged control levers and handles, an extra wide saw hook for modern engineered lumber up to 2 1/2 inches thick, and a top-access spindle lock that is easy to use, engages immediately, and eliminates oil leaks, states DeWalt

Makita's New Drywall Screwdrivers

Makita_FS2200_EASSpecifically designed for the drywall contractors, acoustical contractors, carpenters, plaster contractors, maintenance contractors, and general contractors seeking a solid drywall screwgun, Makita just released three new drywall screwdrivers, models FS2200 (2,500 RPM), FS4200 (4,000 RPM) and FS6200 (6,000 RPM).

Typical features to look for in a drywall screwgun are variable speed and reversible motor and autofeed system, adjustable torque settings, RPM and amperage of motor, plastic or metal clutch housing and adjustable clutches. But the key feature to look for in drywall screwdrivers is a depth gauge so you don't drive the screws too deep and rip the drywall paper. All three of the new Makita drywall screwgun models come with an adjustable depth locator assembly with Sure-Lock, which is specifically designed for consistent screw depth driving.
