The Leatherman Surge: Wave's Big Brother
Written by Zach Peil
Tuesday, 24 June 2008

Yesterday I had a look at the Leatherman Wave, a versatile and popular multi-tool.  If you’ve never experienced a multi-tool before and aren’t quite sure what you want, the Wave is a great all-around choice that should satisfy almost anyone with its array of tools.  But what if you know you’re going to need something even more macho than the Wave?  Maybe you should take a look at the Leatherman Surge….

The Leatherman Surge is the Wave’s beefier big brother, weighing in at 12.5 ounces and 4.5 inches long when closed.  While it is noticeably larger and heavier in the hand than the Wave—and therefore slightly less portable—the Surge’s increased girth affords you a multi-tool that is absolutely bristling with useful doodads.  Keep reading for more details and the immense list of tools that are included in the Leatherman Surge.

Porter-Cable Introduces the 390 Series Low Profile Random-Orbit Sander
Written by Zach Peil
Tuesday, 24 June 2008

Here comes an exciting new product that promises to be the bane of rough surfaces everywhere: the Porter-Cable 390 Series Low Profile Random-Orbit Sander.  What makes this thing exciting?  Well, here's some details straight from the horse's mouth.  This sander sands 42% faster and spins down 73% faster than existing random-orbit sanders.  On top of that, Porter-Cable has minimized the number of moving parts in an effort to increase durability, lending the 390 ROS a motor life that is five to ten times longer than that of existing products.  As if that wasn't enough, the 5" tall low profile design brings you hand 31% closer to the material being sanded, giving you heightened control over the sander so that you can produce a better finish.

Porter-Cable is currently taking orders for the 390 Series Random-Orbit Sander, and they say that it will begin shipping by the end of this month or early July.  It will be available in four models: the 390 with hook & loop pad, 390K kit with hook & loop pad, the 392 with PSA pad, and the 394 with PSA pad and dust collection.  Pricing will be about $129.00.

largele830037.jpg Chances are good that you’ve found yourself searching for a basic tool to solve a basic problem at least once in your life.  Unless you carry a toolbox wherever you go, chances are also good that you’ve had to rely on a random something that you found under the seat in your car to solve that basic problem.  And let’s face it: while MacGyver would have had no trouble opening a can of beets with a plastic spork and a shoestring, jury rigging ordinary objects into useful tools is probably not your forte.  Enter the Leatherman!
