Circular Saws: Worm Drive vs Top Handle Print E-mail

In what situations would one use a wormdrive Circular saw over a "standard" circular saw? -Jon R.

Makita M5377MG I personally own both types of saws (worm/top handle.)  The worm drive saw is heavier, for example, my Makita 5277MG worm drive saw nets at 15 pounds and my Makita 5007 top handle saw nets at 10 pounds.  5 pounds is a lot if you are using it overhead.   For overhead applications, I find the top handle saw much easier to use.  Makita 5007FAKThe worm drive saw is a heavier duty saw and I find it much easier to use in flat applications.  I have better control of the worm drive saw in flat applications.  If I were to recommend a single saw around the house, it would be the top handle circular saw, however, if I were framing all day, I would certainly choose the worm drive saw.   Want to have Popeye arms, get a worm drive saw.  By the way, use quality blades (carbide-tipped) in your saw to help produce a better quality cut and less wear and tear on your saw.
