Buying Guides - Automotive Tools

A bearing splitter / puller is a compact tool used to pull out or separate priorly attached bearings. This tool is used in carpentry and automotive industries. Additionally, since this tool is small in size and easily workable, it can be used by laymen too and forms a useful tool to have at home. The puller can be used where space constraints restrict the use of puller jaws being inserted behind the part being pulled. The tool is ideal for removing bearings and bushings from pumps, flywheels, and Generators. Steering wheels, gears, pullets, and gears can also be removed along with ball bearing separation. Semi floating rear axle bearings, flange type rear axles, and oil seals can be quickly removed with the bearing splitter. This tool is handy and portable and eliminates the requirement of a bench-mounted tool to remove bearings. This tool is also used to remove side carrier bearings from cars and smaller trucks. The bearing puller can be used for both inner bearing and taper bearing races. While this tool is mostly used by professional workers such as carpenters, masons, plumbers, mechanics and other building contractors, the bearing splitter is compact and easy enough to be used by lay persons and is a handy gadget to have at home.

Features and working of a bearing splitter / puller

Considering the resistance this tool is subjected to when used to extract a bearing, it is rendered with a heavy duty construction with deep forged heat treated steel. For greater stability and rigidity, the steel bolts are precision machined, hardened, and tempered. The gripping edges are knifelike and sharp to provide adequate grip behind the component being pulled even when the clearance is exceptionally tight. The spread ranges between around a minimum spread of 1/2 inch and a maximum spread of 4-5/8 inches, with the distance between screws being 4-3/8 inches. The bearing puller jaws have an inner diameter capacity of around 13 to 32 mm.

The bearing splitter is generally compatible with puller # 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 7392, and 7393. It is also compatible with step plate adaptors numbers 8060, 8061, 8063, and 8064. It can be used along with a push-puller and a grip-o-matic puller. A washer is used to provide a firm grip on the bearing. The puller is compatible with most standard bearing sizes from around 1 inch to 2-7/8 inches.

To increase pulling efficiency and also prevent breakage or damage to the bearings, the tool is designed to provide uniform pulling force over the complete bearing. This enables even tight or rusted bearings to be pulled out easily. Sometimes the tool’s jaws are expanded inside the bearing and subsequent pressure exerted on the crankshaft. The splitter has either a cone head or a flat head for the push rod. When used in combination with a push puller, the puller legs are threaded into the attachment’s dual tapped holes.

What to look for in a bearing splitter / puller

The bearing splitter / puller is usually rendered with a black oxide finish for added durability. The puller may be shipped with around 4 differently sized collets, with the correct one being chosen depending on the application. Further strength is rendered to the tool with a drop forged chrome vanadium steel arm construction. Three sets of 100 mm triple leg pullers with an intrinsic locking system help to clamp the jaws firmly to the bearing. Four sets of hex push-puller legs and a bar type puller head having a 9/16 inch forcing screw enables a wide array of pulling tasks to be made possible with this tool. While the bearing can be removed with one side of the tool, the same component can be reinserted with the other portion of the tool. The superior safety cage design provides greater locking capacity with minimal slippage making this tool safer and longer lasting than traditional pullers. Some pullers have a capacity of around 20 tons.

A blow molded reinforced plastic case helps to store the tool safely. Occasionally, the bearing splitter is shipped with a 2-1/2 pound slide hammer with a T-handle. Some bearing splitters have a pulley pulling attachment.

Some reputed manufacturers of bearing splitters / pullers include Cal-Van, Grip, and OTC.
