Leak detection tools aid in the accurate discovery of leaks in various plumbing systems, sewers, swimming pools, fountains, and water tanks. The latest electronic leak detecting systems enable even hidden and underground leaks to be detected. These non-invasive leak detection tools can detect leaks behind concrete walls and other partitions without requiring any breakage of the walls. Even underground leakages can be easily detected. Regular leak detection is a necessity even in new constructions, as water has an eroding effect on the surroundings, and this coupled with corrosion and rust, as well as sudden subterranean ground movements can result in pipe breakage.

Features and working of a leak detection tool

One of the most common methods of leak detection is the use of ultra violet (UV) light. Some of the tools incorporate twelve light emission diodes (LED’s) to increase the intensity of the light beam for finding relatively inaccessible leaks. The tool generally injects a dye into the system at a force of around 150 pounds per Square inch (PSI). The dye can be used for approximately 64 applications. The applications of leak detection in air-conditioning (A/C) systems are manifold. The tool is judiciously designed to prevent any air from entering the A/C system. In order to use the tool, the provided coupling needs to be affixed to a lower service port and the trigger is required to be pressed, depositing the dye in the A/C system. The injection guns commonly have R12 or R134a adaptors and hoses. A focusing lens feature helps to concentrate the light beam for sharper leak detection. Certain leak detectors have an approximately 50 watt, 12 volt lamp for added visibility. Leaks can be found quickly and easily with minimal calculation or measuring required.

Refrigerant leak detectors have a detection capability of all Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), Hydro CFC, and Hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. These units incorporate a positive ion-emission heated-diode sensing element, with a user-friendly visual calibration system combined with an audio alarm. The length of an average probe is around 4 to 5 feet. Some refrigerant detectors have a 10 second warm-up time. The A/C refrigerant oil with the dye combines lubrication with fast detection, which is compatible with paraffin, ester, mineral, and PAG oils. This oil also prevents corrosion and undue acid formation.   

A threshold balancing control system enables direct focusing on the leak location eliminating secondary contamination. The corona discharge system generates a high voltage corona at the tip. The presence of a refrigerant breaks this field and results in an alarm being raised.

Some often used leak detection techniques include groundwater and vapor monitoring, manual and automatic tank gauging, statistical inventory reconciliation (SIR), and interstitial monitoring. Both small as well as large leaks can be detected efficiently.

Some leak detection lamps have three operational modes; Off, UV, and White. With a flexible head, the light can be directed in tight areas too. Certain ‘hard to detect’ leaks are discovered with an adjustable service mirror intrinsic to the lamp. In automotive workshops, leaks can also be detected in vehicle bodies by spraying the car bodies with mixture of water and dye and then shining the lamp from inside. The bulb life of most of these lamps is approximately 100,000 hours since they are often held close to the body, they are designed not to get hot. The lamp is made small enough to fit into tight spaces can easily be gripped in a single hand.

What to look for in a leak detection tool

Most leak detection tools are shipped with a rechargeable battery. The UV light using detectors should have UV enhancing glasses for the user, ensuring a clearer reading. Considering the rough usage the leak detection tool may be subjected to, such tools are constructed of a sturdy material that offers durability and a long life. Additionally, since this tool may be required to be used outdoors and carried to various locations, a strong carrying case is normally included with the unit.

A universal dye, such as a Flouro-Lite dye, is preferred as it is compatible with all A/C systems. These dyes are also supported by most fluorescent leak detection lamps. Coolant dyes are manufactured in such a way that they so not smudge the coolant color. Most detectors are also shipped with dye cleaners. An approximately 16 inch gooseneck enables one-handed operation, thus freeing the user’s other hand for different tasks. The tip of a refrigerant leak detector is usually embellished with a mirror finish and is also cleanable for enhancing the life of the tool.
