A laser Level uses a light beam to determine
the even Levels of surfaces. These tools are used by skilled workers
such as carpenters, masons, brick layers, concrete workers, and other
building contractors. This enables a single worker to determine the
correct alignment, saving both time and labor. A rotary laser levels
work by shining a grid-like pattern on the surface to be checked,
this is useful for laying down floor panels and tiles, also installing
wall fixtures, studs, switches, and lighting implements. They are also
used for wallpapering, stenciling, wainscoting. Rotary laser levels are
extensively used by plumbers to layout pipes and shower fixings,
whereas electricians use it to fit light fixings on the ceiling of a
room. Other useful applications of rotary laser levels include floor to
ceiling point transfer, door, window, and skylight alignment, trim and
mill installation, and grade determination.
Features and working of a rotary laser level
A rotary laser level works by shining a
rotating laser beam that is detected by a sensor. This sensor is
receptive to a certain frequency of laser light. The receiving sensor
notifies the operator about the location of the detected beam of light;
whether it is high, low, or exactly in the center. Standard features
include Dual beams (level and plumb), short and long chalk line “point
and shoot” sweep modes, and LED mode indicator. The rotary laser level
tool is designed for uncomplicated use. These devices can rotate the
laser beam across the complete 360 degree circle, offering excellent
accuracy. The maximum rotating speed is around 600 revolutions per
minute. It has a fully automatic leveling system with out-of-level shut
off. This reduces the overall set up time and increases accuracy. A
built-in anti-drift system alerts the user if the ‘height of
instrument’ is accidentally altered. Specialized rotary head and
weather proof designs make these devices ideal for indoor as well as
outdoor use. Modern rotary laser levelers do not require manual
leveling. Wireless remote control system gives the operator the
flexibility of single handedly controlling the device over long
distances. A digital laser detector can detect the laser beam even
whilst at a distance or in sunny conditions. A sturdy tripod is
essential as it enables the tool to be firmly placed on the ground. A
foldable tripod stands increases flexibility and portability. The
wavelength of the laser light is approximately 650 to 700 nanometers
(NM). These tools offer excellent precision, which is measured around
±3mm at a distance of 30m.
What to look for in a rotary laser level:
Since the intensity of the laser light is
strong it has the potential to cause damage to the human eye if shine
directly on it; thus all laser levels have to meet the specifications
laid down by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
This is a US based organization governing the safety parameters for
most power tools.
A person using a laser level would also be
performing other tasks, which is why an intrinsic adaptor is need to
keep the operators hand free whilst the device is at work. Better
visibility and added protection is provided with laser enhancing
glasses. An automatic leveling system reduces the total setup duration.
Some laser levels have a magnet at the base. Since a magnet has a
uniformly smooth surface, this ensures that the tool is placed evenly
on the surface so that the laser is level. When the tool is mounted on
a tripod, three bubble vials indicate the base levels. These vials
usually have a protective shield that shut out the sun to making it
easy to read. An automatic out-of-level sensor shuts down the tool,
therefore eliminating any chance of taking a wrong reading. A lower
power indicator notifies the user that the batteries in the device have
run out of power.
Rotary laser levels usually have a vibration
reduction feature, which prevents the loss of accurate measurements due
to misalignment. Rubber grips are essential as they keep the tool in
place whilst in use.
