The Leatherman Surge: Wave's Big Brother Print E-mail

Yesterday I had a look at the Leatherman Wave, a versatile and popular multi-tool.  If you’ve never experienced a multi-tool before and aren’t quite sure what you want, the Wave is a great all-around choice that should satisfy almost anyone with its array of tools.  But what if you know you’re going to need something even more macho than the Wave?  Maybe you should take a look at the Leatherman Surge….

The Leatherman Surge is the Wave’s beefier big brother, weighing in at 12.5 ounces and 4.5 inches long when closed.  While it is noticeably larger and heavier in the hand than the Wave—and therefore slightly less portable—the Surge’s increased girth affords you a multi-tool that is absolutely bristling with useful doodads.  Keep reading for more details and the immense list of tools that are included in the Leatherman Surge.

Like the Wave, the Surge features tools in the outer edges of the handle that can be flipped out easily without opening up the whole gadget.  The four tools that could be opened this way on the Surge that I handled were two knives (one straight blade and one serrated), a saw, and a surprisingly large, powerful and satisfyingly springy pair of scissors.  If desired, the saw can be swapped for a file fairly easily.  All of these tools are quite a bit larger than the ones built into the Wave—a benefit of the Surge’s larger size, and not the only benefit either; check out the list of tools in this thing!

  • All-Locking Blades
  •  Needlenose Pliers
  • Regular Pliers
  • Wire Cutters
  • Hard-Wire Cutters
  • Stranded-Wire Cutters
  • Electrical Crimper
  • Clip-Point Knife
  • Serrated Knife
  • Scissors
  • Blade Exchanger
  • Diamond File Blade
  • Wood File Blade
  • Saw Blade
  • Large Bit Driver
  • Small Bit Driver
  • 5/16" screwdriver
  • Awl w/ Thread Loop
  • Ruler (9inches/22cm)
  • Bottle/Can Opener
  • Wire Stripper
  • Lanyard Ring
  • Two Double-Ended Bits

With all of those tools packed in together, it's clear that the Leatherman Surge is a multi-tool that can handle countless situations.  If you absolutely, positively must be prepared for anything, you should definitely consider the Surge.
