milwaukee2601-22.jpgMilwaukee has come out with a new battery platform and style on their 18v lithium ion battery power tools, featuring the 2601-22 Compact drill/Driver.

So what's the big deal with this 18v lithium-ion power drill you ask?
It's Milwaukee's new 1.4Ah Lithium Ion battery with 4 (four) connections points for more transfer of energy and faster charge time. The battery features a built-in battery fuel gauge to tell you how much juice you have left. That's fade-free juice pal, until the battery is dead. Then, whammo, 30 minutes later you've got a fully charged, ready-to-go battery. But never fear - - you don't really have to wait 30 minutes to get back to work. Milwaukee's hooked you up with this kit. The 2601-22 Compact Drill/Driver comes with 2 (two) batteries, a charger, driver drill bit and of course, a nice sturdy case to carry it all in. (I still think all the manufacturers should just throw 2 bits into each tool - what's it cost them, an extra nickel???)

At a measly four pounds (4 lbs, 1 oz according to our scale), the 18-v Lithium-ion Battery 2601-22 is perfect to carry around with you all day for electrical work, light assembly, installation and finish carpentry. It has a sturdy but removable belt hook, 400 lbs of torque for power and (0-1,400) RPM of speed to drill holes and drive screws faster. The 2601-22 also has an LED light for added visibility, ergonomic design for balance, two-speed magnesium gearbox, 22-position clutch setting, and a plastic ratcheting chuck for lightweight, versatility and control. It retails for about $220 and comes with a 2000 charge/5-year warranty.

Another interesting point to note, the 2601-22 is the first tool available with Milwaukee's new "modernized" look. For the longest time, Milwaukee hasn't seemed to focus as much attention on aesthetics, instead concentrating on just making good tools. Consequently, the look of Milwaukee tools hasn't been  significantly updated. Heck, some of their shop vacs look like they were designed forty years ago and have never changed since. However, it now appears that Milwaukee is starting to give the appearance of their tools a lot more attention. We REALLY like the looks of the 2601-22 and hope to see many more products following in it's footsteps.

It is backwards compatible with the other Milwaukee tools, like the Lithium Ion V18 series? uh, no. yea, that's the bummer.
But what Milwaukee is saying is that their 18v Lithium-Ion battery technology is now better than ever. And that they have a great new, lightweight drill/driver powered by it. According to our sources, it's only the first of many new tools that will be developed for Milwaukee's new 18v Lithium Ion system Whaddaya think?

the makita is .5 lbs lighter and has 50lbs. more torque and charges 15 mins faster, there is an impact driver available, a flashlight available, and a radio. so, no... the milwaukee is not a good investment. the only things it does have are a rubberized battery and a battery indicator.

Milwaukee only weighs 4 lbs so how can the black and white zebra be 5 lbs lighter? From what I was told Milwaukee is working on ADD ON tools to accommodate this battery platform. Warranty MILWAUKEE FIVE YEARS! Makita ONE YEAR talk about Bad Investment sorry Makita you lose.

Not 5 pounds,0.5 pounds less which is 3.5 pounds. And it gets great ratings everywhere you look, amazon etc.Its a winner.

I went to home depot to buy the makita and saw the milwaukee for the first time. I have to admit, I liked the feel of the Milwaukee, but haven't seen too much info out there about it.

Everybody who has the makita seems to love it.

Can anyone advise on which is truelly better or is a win-win either way you go?

Perhaps there is a difference with the battery life?

Thanks

Per the Milwaukee website, their V18 LiIon will take 2000 charges.
Per Makita's website, the 18v LXT takes 1400 charges.
Both are great companies that have been around a long time. You should test and see which of their tools feel the most comfortable in your hand.

Thanks for the feedback and nice chart ;). I'm going for the Milwaukee based upon feel and battery life. I'll post again after some use.

what do you think of the milwaukee compact drill now?

I am thinking of buying this or the makita compact drill. Has anyone been using the milwaukee compact drill for awhile? Can you tell me how it holds up? I keep hearing about a lot of battery problems with the Makita, and wondered if anyone had any with the 1.4 milwaukee batteries. Also does anyone know if milwaukee is bringing out a 1.4 compact impact driver, like makita has ?

I HAVE HAD THE MAKITA FOR OVER A YEAR AND I JUST GOT THE NEW MILWAUKEE BECAUSE LIKE ALOT OF TOOL HEADS OUT THERE I HAVE TO HAVE NEW TOOLS.SO SINCE I HAVE THE ABILITY TO USE BOTH TOOLS I HAVE TO SAY THAT MY MAKITA WINS BY A LONG SHOT(KEEP IN MIND ITS OVER A YEAR OLD)IN MANY DIFF FEILDS MY MAKITA OUTSHINED THE MIL.THE BATTERY IS STONGER THE DRILL IS LIGHTER AND THE CHARGER WORKS FASTER. THE MILWAUKEE IS A GREAT TOOL SO IM NOT DOGGING IT BUT WHEN COMPARED SIDE BY SIDE THE MAK TAKES THE LEAD..

Long Shot,
Thanks for the intell. I actually went out to buy the Makita, and saw the Milwaukee sitting there. I wasn't aware they had a compact drill. I own the Milwaukee v28 hammer drill, sawzall,Circular saw,and impact wrench.[solid tools]I need a light duty drill. My friends have 4 Makita compacts, used every day 0 battery problems.Do you have any advice on the makita compact impact driver? Thanks!
Engineer 1 - Milwaukee compact - a good buy   | 72.148.32.253 | 2008-02-02 15:02:29
I have a Milwaukee 18v compact drill, and it is a great little drill. It is balanced nicely, has good power, short charge time, durability, and Milwaukee's 5-year warranty, which is the industry best, hands down. It is all based on preference, but I own alot of tools, and the Milwaukee tools I own have never let me down. I have looked at the design of many tools, and other manufacturers have very good tools, but I buy quality and durabilty. Milwaukee has both and they have always been known for their drills, and this one fits in with their heritage of quality, and it is a good buy. If the Makita fits your bill, then go for it, but the Milwaukee for me wins just because of the warranty alone, not to mention the other features of this product.

I own alot of V28 tools, the batteries have never failed. It's tough to turn down the 5 year warranty on the 2601-22 and buy the Makita Zebra. I think I agree with engineer1. Anybody know when milwaukkee is releasing more tools with this battery platform?

I JUST BOUGHT THE MILWAUKKE 2601-22 AND ITS CHARGING IN THE GARGAGE. BUT BEFORE I CHARGED IT, WITH ONLY ONE BAR LEFT ON THE BATTERY, I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUN SEE HOW FAR A 1" AUGER BIT WENT INTO A FRESH PINE LOG. IT WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE CHUCK. i WOULD SAY THATS ALL THE POWER I WILL EVER NEED IN A CORDLESS DRILL.
Edgar Poe - makita better no contest   | 69.94.214.72 | 2008-03-31 15:20:31
I am a loyal Milwaukee fan for 30 years and have both of these tools. The makita is lighter, more powerful and charges faster. It also is available in a combo pak with the impact driver for only $240, which is $40 more than the Milwaukee drill alone. Once you use an impact tool you will NEVER use a drill driver again for 90% of your uses!So much more lightweight and efficient for fasteners and it will blow a 3.5 inch screw through maple like buttah. I still like the Milwaukee in the heavy hammer drill category but for the compact tools Makita is the one
