Ever try and drive a nail into a place where barely your hand could fit? Well, then here's the perfect little tool for you, a pneumatic hand nailer. Whaatchizitz you ask? Hand Nailers or palm nailers are pneumatic nailers that pound in one bulk nail as opposed to a regular pneumatic nailer that launching a series of nails in just seconds. These types of mini-nailers are good for tight corners and places that there isn't enough room to swing a hammer or reach with a regular sized pneumatic nailer. They are also handy for driving in nail heads that have been left sticking out.
DeWalt makes one, the D51180, which is a reconditioned heavy-duty Palm Nailer that will drive 6d - 16d bulk jobsite fasteners nails easily. The D51180 has a nice lightweight design with a full metal housing that withstands most jobsite abuse. And, the DeWalt D51180's handy magnetic tip allows you to easily place nails in tight spaces.
Grip-Rite also makes mini air-nailer, says Drew Sundholm, product manager for Grip-Rite. Sundholm says Grip-Rite's GRTMP16 6d Mini Air Nailer was a hit at a remodeling trade show in early 2007. The tool weighs just 1 pound, making it smaller and 66% lighter than its big brother.
Palm nailers such as the DeWalt D51180 and the Senco PC0781/A20 can also be used for driving grounding rods and driving spikes into ties for landscaping. You wouldn't want to use this type of nailer all day long, hand nailers are more of a task specific type of tool because overuse could cause wrist and elbow damage. But for under $100, they sure are useful tool in a tight space.
