HEY! Check out this dust collector attachment for miter saws - the Rousseau Downdrafter. It looks kinda like an old school salon hair dryer - you know, the kind that sit on a pedestal and cover your head like a space helmet. Then again, maybe you don't know. My mom had one in our basement and used to torture us with rollers when we were younger but again - you probably don't care about that either!
Anyhoo ~ this is one cool dust collector. It can hook up to a 4 or 5 inch port and the 4550 Pedestal style model Downdraftercan be easily positioned behind any Miter saw, lathe, and Radial Arm Saw ~ at any angle. Such versatility even comes cheap! The Downdrafter retails for about $150, depending upon the model you choose.
The Downdrafter also comes in a benchtop version that will clamp onto your workbench and attach to your dust collection system with an easy hose connected to the dust port.
Mathew Drage purchased the Rousseau Downdrafter at an online retailer and had this to say about it:
"It is a simple, well designed unit that easily adjusts to fit behind your saw. I have a Dewalt 12" sliding Compound miter saw and the DownDrafter snuggles up to the back of it nicely. When adjusting for angled cuts, the DownDrafter easily moves left/right on its wheeled stand. The hood swivels on top of the stand, independent of the hose, so movement of the hood doesn't make the hose twist."
From ShopNotes.com:
"The Downdrafter is a dust collection hood made of impact-resistant molded plastic with a 4" dust collection port. Using the hood, your dust collector can handle even the worst dust clouds (like cutting MDF) without missing much."
Working the Angles:
"The problem with trying to collect dust at the miter saw is the fact that the dust exhaust changes position as you move the blade to make angled cuts. That means a fixed collection point won’t do the job — especially when you angle the blade to cut at 45°. So a smart system would allow you to move the collection point with the blade. And that’s exactly what the Downdrafter does."
