The Makita rep who was just at our store today said that Makita did not make their batteries back backwards compatible because they redesigned their entire line to be ergonomically balanced. makes sense.

how were the "top 5" chosen? it seems that Bosch is absent in this conversation and Ryobi and DeWalt entries are a bit premature.

Bosch doesn't yet make an 18v lithium ion cordless system, they only make 10.8v and 36v. The aim with this article was to illustrate the differences between available 18v lithium ion options, not to rate them by quality. If we missed an 18v lithium ion system, please let us know and we will definitely add it to the chart!

Why no Ridgid? They are certainly the quality mfgr compared to their poorer cousin and have had an 18V LI on the market longer........

As far as I can tell, Ridgid's LiIon is a 24v. We'll make another chart and include 24volt options as well. Thanks for the info !

To Ray, who are you reffering to by "the Poorer Cousin?"

Does anyone know if the Rigid 18V Lithium-Ion batteries are backwards compatible with older Rigid 18V Ni-Cad power tools? Rigid is a division of Ryobi or at least this is what I have gathered trying to order parts for my drill. I purchased a new drill with the lithium batteries and am wondering if my old ni-cad tools can be used with these new lighter lithium batteries.
