With a roof over my head, but none over my car or motorcycle, maintenance and repairs are often done in the street, and usually in the evening hours. I recently snapped the serpentine-belt on my car, and with it went the use of my alternator, power steering and H20-pump. A wimpy flashlight was not going to do. What I needed was portable, bright, long lasting light. We recently starting selling TerraLux LED products, here at Tool King. The TLW-60 seemed to be just what I needed, that is, until I saw the TLW-80, which not only has the 60-LEDs for use as a work light, but also an additional 20-LEDs in the head, making this a nice LED flashlight, as well. I decided to buy one.
I really like LED Flashlights — they last significantly longer than conventional bulbs, LEDs rarely burn out (Just think how often you use your television remote — it also uses an LED to transmit the signal), and produce a very pleasing white light. The TLW-80 did this, and more. It contains a rechargeable battery (1.5 - 2-hour charge time for 4-hours use) and can charge or run directly from your vehicle’s 12V power supply, or from a household outlet; this is a nice feature considering most rechargeable flashlight cannot be used while charging. These lights utilize NiMH (Nickel Metal-Hydride) batteries instead of the bulky lead-acid type, (often found in spotlights.) In addition, unlike lead-acid batteries, NiMH batteries can be discharged completely without losing capacity, last longer than lead-acid and do not suffer from the “Memory effect” as NiCDs do. These lights are extremely lightweight, reducing fatigue and preventing it from cracking if dropped (as my previous spotlight had). Run-time is 2-hours at full brightness and another 2, slightly dimmer. Overall, I’m extremely pleased with this flashlight. It would be nice if this model also came with the hook and angled sides as the TLW-60 does, but an optional magnet mount further increases versatility. I keep mine in my car, it doesn’t double as an emergency “billy club” the way a 3-5 D-Cell Maglite would, but Terralux makes LED Upgrades Kits for those too…
