Cut-off saws, also referred to as "chop saws" or "abrasive saws", are an essential part of any well-equipped shop. Cut-off saws are used for quickly cutting metal materials, such as metal bars or pipes. At first glance, a Cut-Off Saw slightly resembles a Miter saw, and in some ways, they are related. One of the key differences is that a miter saw uses a metal blade and a cut-off saw uses a thin abrasive wheel, usually made of a combination of fiberglass and metal. Unlike a miter saw, cut-off saws have a built in vise to keep the material being cut steady.
In use, cut-off saws tend to produce showers of hot sparks from the material being cut. Therefore, it's important to take precautions to properly protect yourself and to make sure that flamable materials are not located anywhere near the tool.
Today's Tool of the Day is the Makita 2414NB 14" Cut-Off Saw. Click "read more" to continue.
The Makita 2414NB is a no-frills metal cutting monster. All a cut-off saw really needs to do is quickly and cleanly cut metal, and this one is very good at achieving that task. It's small and light enough (about 37lbs) that it could be considered portable, but it's also powerful enough to handle most metal cutting jobs you can throw at it.
The adjustable guide plate can be placed in three different positions and angled 45° left or right to easily accomodate any material up to 4 1/2" round.
The 2414NB also is equipped with some good safety features. As we mentioned above, Cut-Off saws have a tendency to generate a huge amount of sparks. There isn't much you can do about that, but Makita did engineer this saw in a way that diverts most of the sparks away from the user. A locking on/off button ensures that the saw isn't accidentally turned on by guests or children in your shop.
