10 Tools You Might Not Know About Print E-mail

You may or may not have heard of these tools. Some are obscure and rarely used, some are new to the market. Thanks to the guys from Lumberjocks.com for helping me complete this list...Read on tool freaks...

denailer.jpg1.DeNailer by Reconnx, is a handheld pneumatic nail remover. Made specifically for Deconstruction, the DeNailer shoots nails out of boards.

2. Stiletto Cold Shrink Handle Wrap: It is literally shrink-wrap for any kind of handles from 1-7/8" down to 3/4" (think: shovels, rakes, tools, etc.). The handle wrap applies very easily and makes hard handles more comfortable.

3. Keith  from Lumberjocks.com: Have you ever heard of the Tiger Stop? It’s a fully automated stop system that can be added to most any saw system. Fully programmable…especially for repetitive cuts, but your whole cutting list can be programmed and the stop moves automatically to the dimension programmed.

 4. CedarFreak Carl from Lumberjocks.com: The Chestmate: This is a new tool that puts a new spin on dovetails. I saw it in FWW, but at any rate, it will dovetail unlimited width stock and is relatively cheap @ $100. But Karson stated, "I don’t believe that it does variable thickness of pins and tails easily."

5. Rick from Lumberjocks.com: Stroke sander. Much better than a drum sander for general sanding. Not designed for thicknessing but does a superior job of removing planer marks and allows one to send the piece right to finishing. A drum sander requires additional hand or random orbit sanding to remove drum ripples. A good widebelt also can also do finish sanding if it has a sanding platen. Stroke sanders are still commonly listed in many woodworking catalogs such as Grizzly, Minimax, Progress, Woodworkers Supply but I don’t think most folks even notice them. A stroke sander can deal with cross sanding on panel doors. We often used flexible J weight belts for contour sanding of profiled edges such as a radiused table top edge. loadlatch.jpg

6. Graphite Mitt: places a new meaning of hand sanding. Used in custom metal shops on everything from brass, bronze casings and stainless steel for very specialized metal finishes.

7. Load Latch with the Gap Strap from LoadLatch.com: Innovative system that keeps your load off the road.

mototool.jpg8. Sam Yeradi from Lumberjocks.com: My dad gave me a hand-held Dremel Moto-tool fret/scroll saw that was made in the 50's. I’ve never seen one anywhere else. It’s like a scroll saw but hand-held. Dremel still make blades that will fit it and they've since also made a base for it so that it can be used as a true scrollsaw. For me it was very easy to break the blades but it was because I kept wanting to push it like a jigsaw. I think if you practiced with it, it would be a useful tool. When you use the saw free hand, try to use it as if it is a coping saw. It’s funny about this tool. I never saw my dad use it in all the years he was with me. It wasn’t until after he passed away that I plugged it in a tried it. The first time you squeeze the trigger it scares the daylights out of you because it is such a loud buzzing sound. Like a hair trimmer on steroids.

9.henway.jpg Dadoo, via Lumberjocks.com: Froe, Spokeshave, Commander, Adze, Draw knife, and the ever popular Henway. A Froe is used to split logs and make shingles. A Spokeshave and drawknife and Adze shape/debark logs. And the Commander is that huge hammer the bad guy was using in that Arnold Swarzenegger movie “Conan” as a simple way to get his point across. Actually the same thing is used in beam construction to nudge those heavy timbers into the right place. Also good for squashing things, like cans, bottles, failed projects, annoying little neighbors dogs, etc. A Pepsicost is the same as a Cokecost, but much less than a Beercost. And a NY Henway is about 4-6lbs.

10.  Ezee Feed Infeed Outfeed System: The Ezee-Feed System creates a better way to safely cut rough lumber, plywood, MDF, melamine and other sheet goods without having to get assistance from another person. The Infeed-Outfeed system is mounted to and removed from a table saw in seconds with specially engineered brackets that adjust to fit onto nearly any table saw. It will then easily move to your Shaper or to your Router table to assist in making moldings. The Ezee-Feed basically mounts to sliding brackets on a 4' track for multi-positional use.

Nail puller that digs and grip
written by Michael Foley , February 19, 2008
My new extensively patented and patent pending nail puller is coming out this year...it's called the Nail Jack, and I welcome questions and comments from tool guys like me. The version shown is a bit primitive compared to the "state of the art" coming out in quantity, but it's been a long road, and I can't wait to show you all what I think will simplify the nail pull!
