bosch_nail.jpgI had a good opportunity to test out the new Bosch PS30 Compact drill/Driver this weekend. I was refinishing my deck and part of that project included pulling up loose nails and replacing them with deck screws (yup, shoulda used screws in the first place but then i wouldn't have had so much fun trying out the Bosch PS30).

As you can see from the photos, I replaced the nails with 3" deck screws, so the holes were "predrilled". The results were just like Bosch has declared and I was able to drive in 98-3" screws before the battery ran out of juice. And that was just how it happened, screw number 98 went in fine with plenty of torque and when I got to screw number 99, nothing. It didn't slowly run out of power like a NiCad battery would. The 12v lithium-ion battery just stopped. A little whrrrr, then stopped.boschps30screws.jpg

The PS30 comes with two batteries however, so I didn't have to stop working. With a 30 minute recharge rate, I could have kept screwing all day. Thankfully, I ran out of nails to pull.

I have to say that the Bosch PS30 was a very comfortable little driver to use. It is well-designed with the trigger and toggle within fingers reach and ergonomically balanced for superb control while drilling and driving. The PS30 delivers plenty of power with 220 inch-pounds of torque and a 20+1 clutch to keep all that torque under control. It also has a 2-speed drive-train that delivers between 400 - 1100 rpm (at full speed that's twice the speed of any other drill/driver in its class).

The 12v Bosch PS30 has a 3/8" three-jawed chuck: This is designed to do whatever you might need it to do in a single days work such as simple drilling, drilling with spade bits, cutting with hole saws, socket fastening, screwdriving and more. Weighing only 2.4 pounds, you can carry it right in your work apron or pocket for when you need it.The PS30 also has a handy LED light to light up your workspace while you drill and drive.

The Bosch PS30 kit comes with 2-12v lithium ion batteries and a charger all in a nice carrying case. Note: the 12v Max Litheon battery platform is compatible with all the other Bosch Ultra-Compact tools.

The Bosch PS30 Compact Drill/Driver will be available at Toolking.com soon!

I have the ps40 and love how there are 3 lights surrounding the socket. This lights up the area perfectly. How would you compare the ps30's light to the ps40's?

It is the same tool as before but with a 3/8 standard chuck. I see no added value. 12V max is a marketing idea to compete with the Milwaukee.

12V is the future. The future is now.

Ghost,

It doesn't go around the chuck like the PS40. It's got one bright white LED mounted underneath the chuck in a clear plastic light diffuser/spreader. I just pointed both tools at the wall to see which one was brighter and the PS40 was the clear winner. I'll take some photos and post them here on Toologics in a little bit.

tomjohn... I gotta disagree. The two-speed drivetrain is a big upgrade. On the high-speed setting, it's actually fast enough to use things like drill bits and hole saws effectively now. The PS20 and Milwaukee 12V don't have the speed to do that (I know...I have the Milwaukee). That's a whole lot of added value in my book.
