dmd4k.jpgFirst of all, let’s get past any old jokes about stud sensors. We all know some, so let’s just move on right here at the start. Besides, by it’s very name, the Bosch DMD4K Digital Multi-Detector does not merely locate studs, it’s the next best thing to having X-ray vision.

I’ve owned several stud sensors over the years, and they’ve served me well in their limited capacities. The early ones told me where the stud was, but usually through ½” drywall only; anything thicker and I’d have to call my old pal Clark Kent to come and help me out. Later, I found models that would delve a little deeper, finding studs through tile and thicker drywall. But still, the limitation was with what it would locate, or more to the point, what it wouldn’t locate. Now Bosch has come out with the DMD4K Digital Multi-Detector, a stud sensor plus a whole lot more. In addition to wooden studs, you’ll finally be able to locate metal studs, other ferrous and nonferrous materials and, get this, 120-volt wiring; and that’s even in concrete! This is what Superman uses to see through walls when he’s having an off day.

You’d think that with all that power and capability, the Bosch DMD4K Digital Multi-Detector would be as big as a toaster, have to be plugged into the wall, and require a college degree to operate. But no, the hand-held DMD4K runs on a single 9-volt battery and is intuitive as well as user-friendly. The sensing area is a lighted circular aperture that changes from green to red when the desired material is located. In addition to an electronic tone that sounds, there is graduated scale on the digital readout allowing for pinpoint accuracy. That readout also includes indicators for magnetic and nonmagnetic metal and live electrical wiring, which is detected whether in wood or metal sensing mode. The Bosch DMD4K Digital Multi-Detector also has a  Zoom feature that gives you a little additional help when you run into more than one item located closely together, such as pipes next to electrical. There is even a handy slot to carry a small golf-type pencil, two of which are included. You also get a canvas carrying case that conveniently straps to your belt.

There are, of course, more details to these features that are explained in the instructions, which are only a mere 4 short pages long. Suffice to say that the Bosch DMD4K Digital Multi-Detector will meet or surpass your needs before you tear into that wall.
