690lr.gifWhat is the big deal about the Porter-Cable 690LR Fixed Base Router? Well for one, just the words Porter-Cable and Router together cause arousal in most woodworkers. Porter Cable has been making routers for over 100 years which lends itself to a lot of time to work out the kinks. The other manufacturers who make routers like DeWalt and Makita are in constant state of catch-up as far as routers are concerned.

In a nutshell, the 690LR is a 1-3/4hp router that is lightweight(8lbs), compact and inexpensive, yet is of a higher quality than other brand routers of it's size. With a precision machined aluminum motor housing and base, 1/64-inch micrometer depth-of-cut adjustment, 100-percent sealed ball bearing construction and 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch auto-release collets, the PorterCable 690LR ensures that bit changes are as smooth as the router itself.

Porter Cable has also incorporated a new one-handed lever-release height adjustment to the 690LR. No more fumbling with the T-bolt, you can simply adjust your height, "snap" it and rout. This new mechanism is extremely beneficial in router table applications where space is limited. They even added a dust proof switch and larger, more ergonomic handles for better control while routing.

Don't take my word for it though, read an excellent review on the Porter Cable 690LR written by Laura Salvaggio of Utica, NY. I just love her last few sentences: "The difference between an amateur and a true craftsman is often the quality of the tools they use. Be the true craftsman, and get a real router... Not that $40 piece of crap you're considering."
