A more detailed look at the Dremel Multi-Max Oscillating Multi-tool reveals even more exciting features about this new multi-use tool.
Compared to Fein MultiMaster, the Dremel has a narrower body which for smaller hands makes it easier to handle. The Dremel has a shorter cord and the accessories are not of the same quality as Fein's accessories. The blades and Scrapers are made of thinner metal and have a smaller cutting area. On hte Dremel, they are switched out with a hex screw as opposed to the new Top Action Lever System on the newer Fein Multimasters. However, the Dremel states that their accessories also fit the Fein Multi-Master 636 and the Bosch Multi-X PS50 with a separate accessory attachment that is not included.
As far as design and ergonomics, the Dremel Multi-Max is comfortable to use with the on/off switch in easy thumbs reach. A rubber grip helps with shock absorption while the 1.5amp motor runs from 10,000 to 21,000 OPM (osilations per minute).
The Dremel Multi-Max is great for dry sanding of surfaces, corners, and edges; for scraping paint and glue; for sawing soft metals, wood and plastic components, flush cutting trim when you are installing flooring and for grout removal - basically anything you can do with a Fein Multimaster and its accessories, you can do with the Dremel - but it's a less expensive multi-tool.
As far as power, there is no noticeable difference in the speed with which the Dremel cuts wood compared the Fein Multimaster. The basic Dremel Multi-Max kit contains less accessories and they are of lesser quality than the Fein, but they are also considerably less expensive. The Dremel Multi-Max works great - it's smooth running, quick cutting and powerful. I prefer my Fein accessories for durability and longevity but the blades are still sharp on my Dremel after cutting trim pieces for half a day.
The basic Dremel kit includes a flexible scraper, wood cutting flush cut blade, triangle sander with 3 sanding pads and a wood and drywall cutting blade. Retailing for $99 it makes a easy gift or addition to any Professional, DIYer or Homeowners tool kit.
