While strolling through the store, I noticed this clever tool for picking up tools. Think of all those times that your screwdriver, etc rolled off the back of your workbench - or under your workbench - or basically anywhere just out of reach. This handy item will fetch up to 25 pounds of out-of-reach tool(s). Nice.
Grip-On-Tools aptly named it the 'Magnetic Pickup Tool'. It has a nice arm extension of 36" with a smart magnetic end. Costs about 7 bucks.
They also have Magnetic Tool Tray sets, bowls and bars to avoid having your tools roll around in the first place.

Back at AWFS, they had an awesome exhibit of incredible high-school and college projects on display. For some reason, I didn't get any pictures of this display and have regretted it since.
So, imagine my surprise when I saw that Marc "The Wood Whisperer" posted a video tour of it today on his site.
If you want to see some amazing woodcraft done by students, be sure and head over to TheWoodWhisperer.com to view the (short) video.

We just received word that one of our favorite tool manufacturers, Steel City Tool Works, will be offering some great rebates beginning September 1st and running through the end of March 2008. We don't yet have specifics about which products will be on special, however, they do say that "over 15 machines will feature rebates this fall, including several Cabinet Saws, Jointers and Band Saws." We'll post another update the moment we know more.
Additionally, Steel City will also be offering free accessories on ten different machines. Again, we've been unable to find out which ones will include promos or what is being included yet.
If you've either been contemplating the purchase of a new Steel City product or have been drooling over their innovative new granite-topped products, it's probably worth waiting a little longer to see if these upcoming rebates will save you a few bucks.

As I made my way through the Tool King showroom this morning, I noticed a cool new Bosch Rotozip being unpacked for display.
It's the Rotozip RZ25-1100 Drywall Router .
This one is neat because it's optimized for cutting drywall. As Rotozips tend to produce a ton of dust when cutting drywall, the switch is specially sealed to prevent it from getting damaged, a problem that plagued some earlier Rotozips and other similar tools. It's also equipped with a 50' cord and a fabric "soft grip" handle. The entire body of the tool actually has a "soft" rubberized feel to it that makes it easy to grip, even if your hands are dirty (as they usually are when working with drywall). The bezel up front is made of metal for long life. It's powerful too -the little motor can achieve an operating speed of 30,000 RPM in just a few moments.
Everything comes in a nice storage bucket and includes 3 drywall Xbits to get you started.
If you ever need to quickly cut holes in drywall, Rotozips (or spiral saws/cutout tools in general) are probably the best tool for the job. They're fast, accurate, and easy to use. The learning curve is very minimal and you'll find yourself cutting holes faster than ever before. At only $59.99, it's a must-buy if you work with drywall.
The Rotozip RZ25-1100 is available now at Tool King.com!

Marc Spagnuolo, better known as "The Wood Whisperer", may be one of the most prolific contributors to the internet woodworking community. Not only does he produce his own excellent internet video woodworking show, he also contributes to several blogs and participates in the awesome Lumberjocks.com woodworking community.
Marc wrote a great entry about using oils as a simple finish over at WoodTalkOnline.com, a collaborative woodworking blog. Although he's not crazy about finishing his work with oils, he does offer a lot of useful information and tips about using linseed or tung oil as an inexpensive and easy-to-use finishing solution on your next project. If you're new to woodworking or have ever been curious about oil finishes, it's a definite must-read.
One more thing: Marc makes a good safety point that we'll repeat here. Oil-soaked rags are a tremendous fire hazard, so be especially considerate of proper shop fire safety rules when using or disposing these rags!
