Fein Multimaster Review
Written by Jude Herr Monday, 28 January 2008 01:00
I pretty much fell in love with the Fein Multimaster within the first 5 seconds of the store demo. I had to buy one. Fein has a demo stand set up at the ToolKing Superstore (and probably other places where it is sold) and I tried it out cutting grout. It removed the grout easily and quickly and with no strain on my part. As someone who has used a hand grout scraper to scrape out the group in a bathroom, this tool was like a dog door to a 9-5er.
The Fein Multimaster will save you time because it does all those little tasks that you normally do by hand, completes them accurately and in half the time. For instance, cutting out the bottom of door jams to install tile or flooring or scraping flooring glue off before you resurface. The Multimaster is also good in space confining places. The Multimaster comes with an extensive set of accessories such as a carbide rasp to scrape mortar, a lightweight sanding pad that you can use to clean up your headlights, and multiple sanding attachments to get into corners and edges for when you are refinishing furniture, antiques, etc. (Yea, I wish I had one in college when I was refinishing my Aunt Marge's antique doors - no wonder she paid me to sand them by hand!)
The Multimaster is lightweight and yet has a very powerful oscillating action. It weights about 2 pounds and yet will trim the ends off a 2x6 and cut through metal piping. Sure, you could use any number of power tools for these small tasks but that's the big difference. You only have to have one Multimaster to do all these little tasks. One tool, many attachments, many uses and it's not made at some random factory in China - it's made in Germany at the Fein manufacturing plant. Quality control at it's highest.
I purchased the reconditioned XLS Multimaster at Toolking.com for $239. I recommend that over the basic version for $179 because you get all the extra sanding attachments and extra blades.

... The Multimaster is an awesome tool, you just have to remember to let the tool do the work. Oh, and pull all the nails, once you hit a nail with an e-cut blade, it's toast! |

Fein Multimaster I was very impressed by the demo too. However, when I tried it out I was very disappointed. Good for plasterboard and sanding but sawing into timber the blades worked loose in seconds no matter how hard I tightened the screw. As a hacksaw on nails - a joke. Fein have changed the gripping head now from plain to a star shape which actually locates with the star cut out on the tools. I am sure this design change will work but mine hardly ever comes out of the cupboard. A serious waste of money. |

Impressed I was impressed by by the demo at the Bauhous shopping complex in Regensburg. I intend to buy one machine but my worry is how I will be able to get supply of the cutting tols and wear parts. I am from Kenya, Africa. Is it possible for me to get the supplies in Nairobi,Kenya? I look forward to using & making the tool available in my country. Please provide me with some details. |

... Hate it for the price of 400 dollars that I paid for it. Tools were a one time use only thing and it really angered me that you use them once and they are done and have to spend outrageous amounts of money to replace them. I used the sheetrock blade and after 3 pieces of sheetrock, basic cutting nothing hard, it was done. The one that you use to cut metal, ie...nails etc... one time use also...VERY DISAPPOINTED with this tool set. |
