Adjustable Jorgensen Clamps

We had a little drawer box project here at Toologics, a good time to check out some clamps. Of course I had to get Rick, our tool expert, in on the party. What clamps did he recommend? "Hands down, the Jorgensen Clamps made by Adjustable" he said. The Adjustable Jorgensen clamp is both a spreader and a clamper - sounds kinda funky but we'll go with it. Rick says they are stronger than the other clamps in the market because
1. The jaws on the Adjustable Jorgensen meet perfectly together and
2. They have a double cam action in the engine. Just kidding, there's no engine - just look at the photo.

The adjustable Jorgensen clamps illustrated in the above article are not well designed. The nut that holds the upper section of the clamp is not held in place with a locking washer, or a nylon lined nut. I have lost three of the nuts in less than one year. I am a professional woodworker and I run the shop at George School, so the clamps are heavely used, and the nuts just work themselves loose and get lost. We have the Irwin Quick Grip clamps in our shop as well, and they are hands down a better designed clamp. If Jorgensen were to fix the nut problem I would still favor the Irwin for overall design and strength, but it would be a good move for Jorgensen to assure that the clamp doesn't fall apart while in use. Nothing turns a woodworker off faster than a tool that can't hold up to use.
