Bosch's DLR130 Laser Distance Measurer

Bosch_dlr130Bosch's DLR130 Laser Distance Measurer measure length, area, and volume measures in four systems: inches, feet and inches, decimal feet, and metric. The DLR130 has a 2-inch to 130-foot range with an accuracy +/- 1/16 inch. You have the option of two reference points, one located at the back and another at the front of the tool. The DLR130 distance measurer is easier and more accurate to use than a tape measure, especially for one person. It is powered by four AAA batteries that handle approximately 30,000 individual measurements. Priced at about $85, it's cheaper than hiring someone to help you measure rooms, trim, inside windows, soffit heights and more.

The Bosch DLR130 measures fractional measurements in inches to an accuracy of a sixteenth of an inch. Weighing just over 6 ounces with four AAA batteries installed and measuring 4 inches long, 2-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches thick, the DLR130 is small enough to fit in a pocket, purse or tool belt and accurate enough to use for trim carpentry work. The DLR130 also emits a handy click when your measurement is complete, that you can hear or ever so lightly, feel in your hand. This is handy when you are in a noisy environment. It comes with a storage pouch that has a velcro belt hook and a 1/4 inch threaded hole for tripod mounting (nice light size makes it compatible with my Flip video camera tripod stand).

Bosch Impact Tough Hole Saws

Here's the last video that I shot at the Rosewood Construction jobsite in Boulder when "Joe the Pro" came to demo some of Bosch's new accessories. This video demonstrates the Impact Tough Hole Saw. These thin-walled hole saws are designed to deliver fast, clean holes in metal. Bosch's hole saws' features a dept-rim stop to prevent uncontrolled breakthrough, pilot bit springs for automatic disk ejection, and thin walled construction for quick clean holes.

You can catch more "Joe the Pro" on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.com or at his new website www.BoschJoethePro.com.

Baby Daddy Gift List for Father's Day

It's down to the wire folks, if you're shopping for a Father's Day gift. I've given you a few suggestions in the past few weeks and for the last list, I've consulted my favorite baby-daddy's around town. The following is their top three power tool choices for a Father's Day power tool present:

skilsaw1. Circular saw: He actually specified a Skilsaw, so I found this one at Toolking.com for a penny under $75. The Skil 5680-01 is a 7-1/4-inch circular saw that features: a single beam laser on the cut line, patented anti-snag lower guard to reduce snags when making narrow cut-offs, rear-view depth adjustment, ball bearing motor construction, safety lock / guarded trigger to minimize accidental starts, wide foot plate for stability when cutting, power-on LED lets you know when the tool is plugged in, and on-board tool wrench storage.

2. Reciprocating saw: You can get a basic Milwaukee 6509-22 Sawzall Reciprocating Saw with Carrying Case at Toolking.com for $109. I wouldn't go with a cheap store brand on a reciprocating saw. For what you use a reciprocating saw for, even the DIYer ripping through some piping in the house or fencing in the yard needs a solid saw. Cordless recip saw is always a good option too, especially if he happens to be dragging it around in a crawl space.

3. Grinder: If you're really on a budget, you can get this factory-reconditioned Makita 9554NBR 4-1/2-inch angle grinder for only $45 at Toolking.com. You really can't go wrong at that price. I don't recommend a cordless angle grinder because typically when you are using an angle grinder, the task is something that requires power and some time.

Tenryu Saw Blades

tenryu_bladesThe best way to purchase saw blades is to buy them based upon type of material they will be cutting. Whether you are ripping lumber, cutting metal, cutting veneer panels or a combination of materials, it's important to choose the correct saw blade for the job. What a saw blade cuts best is determined by the number of teeth, the type of gullet, the tooth configuration and the hook angle (angle of the tooth).

According to Rockler on Saw Blades 101, saw blades with more teeth generally yield a smoother cut, and blades with fewer teeth move material faster. Therefore, a 10 inch blade designed for ripping lumber, for example, usually has as few as 24 teeth, and is designed quickly move material along the length of the grain. A good rip blade will move through hardwood with little effort and leave a clean cut with a minimum of scoring. On the other hand, a good crosscut blade with 60 to 80 teeth, is designed to give you a smooth cut across the grain of the wood, without any splintering or tearing of the material.

DeWalt Power Tool Accessories

dewalt_impact_rdyDo you use an impact driver? You probably do. More and more folks are jumping on the impact driver bandwagon. They are lighter in weight than a regular drill and more compact, making it easier to reach between joists and in tight spaces. I grab my impact driver before my drill/driver in most cases. I did make the mistake of buying some off-brand hex drill bits to use with it. Once. I broke three bits and was back at the store. DeWalt is helping us with that impact driver accessory problem. DeWALT now has a great category of IMPACT READY™ accessories that are compatible with DeWALT Impact Drivers (DC827KL and DC825KA).

On order to "get it right the first time", DeWalt visited jobsites to find out what complaints users had with the accessories used with their Impact Drivers. What DeWalt found was that we all complained that the existing bits were not durable enough to withstand the high levels of torque generated by impact drivers. We also wanted to use our impact drivers to do more than drill and fasten deck boards, hang drywall and light assembly. But there weren't accessories to accomodate tasks such as drilling into junction boxes, medium gauge steel, stainless steel, aluminum, steel wood and plastics.
