What to look for in a table saw

The most expensive investment for most shops is a table saw. The meat and potatoes of any woodworking garage. The table saw is to a workshop what the engine is to a car,so with most table saws being very expensive what are the most important things to look for in your next saw? Stationary table saws can range from 500 to 5,000 dollars so it is important to know what kind of work and capabilities you need be for you make such a pricey investment.

When I recently purchased a tablesaw I took in account a few  things that were important in my purchase:

Price: Any stationary table saw is going to be rather expensive. However, with table saws you get what you pay for.

Blade: For what I am going to be doing  a standard 10 inch blade should be sufficient. The most important thing for me is being precise when i cross cut.

Table Size: Bigger table equals more space to work. You can always buy table extensions but I figure that if I am going to extend the table out I am better off getting a bigger table to begin with.

Brand: When it comes to a purchase of this magnitude it is important that you are confident in your decision. So whether this is the first table saw purchase or your 40th you want to be happy with it. Everyone has a favorite brand of tool whether it is because your cordless drill has lasted 20 years and you will forever use that product or because your buddy has the latest coolest piece of machinery we all take brands into account.

Power: I would ideally want something with 1.5-3HP anything above 3 gets expensive.

On/Off Switch: This feature goes back to brands where I am comfortable with where the on/off switch is located. When using a table saw it is crucial that you never take your eyes off of the blade so that's why being comfortable with where the on/off switch is so important.

These are just a few things I look for when I am going to purchase a table saw, there are hundreds of variables that people use to buy tools, let us know what your's are. For great deals on table saws head on over to www.toolking.com

value=weight/$
I went through a few contractor saws when I was a kid. Then I worked for a cabinet maker, and learned, and bought and old Unisaw. Replaced bearings, upped the motor, got a decent blade & fence. A quiet 'whee' versus 'buzz'. Stability, but with consequent weight. Ah well. Forgetaboutit.
