Used in conjunction with with a dust collection system that captures dust at the source, air cleaners are a crucial addition a woodworking shop to help avoid respiratory health problems from wood dust and other particulates.

Air drills

Air drills are used for for drilling, honing, reaming and hole sawing. Features to look for when purchasing an air drill include: ergonomic design, precision-machined gearing, reversible motor, variable speed throttle and a quick reverse lever.

Air Hammers

Air hammers are pneumatic tools used to shape, score and smooth metals such as aluminum, copper, and stainless steel. Also called power hammers, features to look for in an air hammer include: blows per minute, air consumption, maximum working pressure, recommended hose size and weight, and the size of the air inlet. Air hammer accessories include: chisel tips, variable tips, and air hoses.

Air rachets

Air rachets are powerful, pneumatic tools used for heavy-duty racheting. A good air rachet will be compact in size, ergonomic and yet, powerful. Look for an air rachet that has an anti-slip head design, high torque, teasing throttle for precise speed control, and includes various socket sizes.

Angle drill

Used for roughing in, an angle driver fits perfectly between studs and joists. Powerful enough to drill holes in white oak timbers, medium-duty angle drills easily cut holes for waste lines, vents, and wires in softwood for new construction. Features to look for in an angle drill include: weight distribution, trigger design, handle size, and speed change location. Optional features like slotted chucks, detachable cords, and clutches can make a big difference in your choice of an angle drill.

Angle grinder

Angle grinders are versatile tools that can grind metal and cut tile, stucco and pavers, rout out mortar, sand, polish and sharpen. Look for angle grinder attachments that cut tile and mortar, wire brush attachments that remove rust and paint and abrasive wheels that can cut or grind steel. Angle grinders range in size from 4-9-inches (wheel size).

Ball-peen hammer

A ball-peen hammer is a type of peening hammer used in metalworking. (The spelling ball-pein is usual in the UK.) It is distinguished from a point-peen hammer or chisel-peen hammer by having a hemispherical peening head. Though the process of peening has become rarer in metal fabrication, the ball-peen hammer remains useful for many tasks such as tapping punches and chisels.

Band clamp

For clamping round, oval and odd-shaped pieces. Features a nylon band and ratchet mechanism. The clamp is tightened by turning a handle. Can be adapted into a multi-angle (or corner) clamp by adding corner blocks, with the nylon band running through the blocks and final pressure added by the handle. Ideal for frames and objects with corners.

Band saw

General workshop saws used to cut intricate designs in wood and metal. Band saws range in throat capacity from 8" to 36", with either two or three wheels for the blade. Band saw blades for the workshop range from 1/8" to 1" wide, in a skip tooth, regular tooth and hook tooth version.

Bases and tripod stands

Bases/tripod stands are designed for rigidity and strength. Used with laser levels, bases and tripod stands should be made from lightweight, yet sturdy material such as aluminum or wood/fiberglass. Tripod stands should be easily adjusted to varying heights, have heavy-duty screws and hinges and be portable.

Belt sanders

Belt sanders range in size from 1" finger sanders to 37" wide, freestanding 15HP sanding machines. The most commonly used belt sander is 3"x 21" (named by belt size). Features to look for in a belt sander include: dB of motor output (for noise), machine balance, location of handle grips to speed control switch, type of platen for a flat sanding surface, and dust collection.

Bench grinder

Bench grinders are great for sharpening other tools such as drill bits, turning tools, scissors, chisels, garden shears and mower blades. Bench grinders can also be used to deburr sharp edges on metal stock and with other attachments, bench grinders can be used to buff, polish, shape and remove rust. Look for features such as two wheels, power amperage draw, wheel speed, weight and accessories such as toolrests, spark deflectors, eye shields and adjusting wrench.

Benchtop table saw

A benchtop table saw is made to be portable and lightweight. The table saw consists of a circular saw blade, mounted on an arbor that is driven by a motor. The material is supported by the "table". Features to look for include dust collection adaptors, construction material, transmission type, measurement system accuracy, wing extension, hand wheel setup, outfeed support, side handle supports, on-board storage for cords, blades and wrenches.

Biscuit and Plate Joiners

Biscuit & Plate Joiners are woodworking tools used to create strong joints in furniture and cabinet making.
