Sandblasters

Sandblasters are used to remove rust, scale and paint from parts and small equipment, etch glass and weather wood by spraying abrasives such as glass beads, aluminum oxide, steel grit and silicon carbideare through a small nozzle. Look for a sandblaster that has a hopper correctly sized for your type of work.

Scissor Truss

TRUSS where the BOTTOM CHORD is not horizontal. It is used where a sloped ceiling is desired in the inside of the building.

Scrapers

Scrapers are power tools designed to remove tile or mortar. Features to look for in a power scraper include: ergonomic design, variable speed motor, durable storage case, angle bit adjustment, location of trigger switch and sliding chuck for easy bit changing.

Screwdriver

Screwdrivers are designed to both tighten and loosen and remove screws. Screwdrivers come in a variety of sizes and styles, both manual, electric and battery operated. It it best to have both a phillips head and a straight head screwdriver, each in a variety of sizes. Another option is one screwdriver that comes with a variety of sized tips that are stored in the handle of the screwdriver.

Screwdrivers and screwguns are used for a variety of applications including drywall, decking and framing with wood and steel. Features to choose from include: adjustable torque settings, RPM and amperage of motor, variable speed and reversible motor and autofeed system, metal or plastic clutch housing and adjustable clutches.

Shaper

A Shaper is a stationary woodworking machine that consists of specially shaped bits spinning on a spindle.The workpiece is fed into the machine while the bit cuts a profile into it. A shaper is basically a larger, stationary version of a router. Shaper accessories include sliding tables, tenon tables, tilting arbor, tenoning hoods and interchangeable spindles.

Shears

Shears are power tools used to cut irregular shapes for metalworking. Look for shears that have a variable speed motor, a swivel head design and are ergonomically balanced. The gauge of shear that you will need will be dependent upon the thickness of the metal that you will be predominantly cutting. Look for a shear that will leave a smooth, burr free edge.

Shellac

Resin flakes dissolved in alcohol used as a finish for wood.

Sockets

Sockets and socket sets come in a wide variety of sizes in both metric and english configurations. There are chrome socket sets, hex/torx sockets, and impact socket sets. Features to look for in a socket set include: rust-proof finish, socket rail or case for storage and durable handle that won't strip easily.

SP (Sealed Pressure)

Suction pressure represents how far up a glass tube a vacuum motor will lift a column of water. This function is measured in inches. Maximum suction pressure or sealed water lift is obtained at zero air flow. Suction pressure decreases as air flow increases.

Spindle sanders

Spindle sanders are perfect for smoothing curves. Available in both a hand-held and a table top version, spindle sanders offer a superior finish after taking out large amounts of material with a belt sander. Features to look for in a freestanding spindle sander include: sanding drum/spindle storage, emergency stop, well machined table top, and dust collection port. Features to look for in an Edge sander include: single knob belt tension adjustment, well-machined steel platen, easily accessed controls, workstop, user-friendly belt changing.

Spirit Levels

A tool used in building and construction to check the angle of objects. Also called a "bubble level" or simply a "level".

Spray gun

Spray guns are used for spray painting houses, cars, arts and crafts and whatever else you might like to paint. Look for a spray gun that is well-balanced and lightweight for easy, fatigue-free use. Spray guns come in gravity feed versions and siphon/ suction Feed Spray Gun options.

In building, used to designate a 90 degree angle.

Stapler

Staplers are used for everything from woodworking to furniture upholstery to arts and crafts to construction. They come in a variety of styles such as: crown staplers, wire staplers, brad nailers, finish and upholstery staplers. Features to look for in a stapler include: easy magazine loading, durable construction, long lip length to get into tight spots, good power-to-rate ratio, and adjustable depth-of-drive.
