D-handle RoutersD-handle Routers are aptly named because of their handle that is shaped like a "D". The trigger switch in a D-handle Router is in the handle, which makes it easy to keep both hands on the machine. Good features to look for in a D-handle router include: detachable power cord, electronic soft start, variable speed motor, electronic feedback technology built in for better control and fewer mistakes, and single wrench bit removal.

DadoA groove in the face of a board, usually to accept another board at 90 degrees as in shelf uprights.

dBA

Measurement of sound in relation to power output.

Dead blow hammer

Specialized mallet helpful in minimizing damage to the struck surface and in controlling striking force with minimal rebound from the striking surface. Commonly constructed of urethane, they regularly appear in solid orange and black. Composite heads and fiberglass handle models are also available. Options include shock absorbent rubber grips, head cavities filled with shot and replaceable faces with metal screws for quick replacement.

DecidiousTrees that shed their foliage annually, commonly referred to as hardwood.

Demolition HammerThe best demolition hammers weigh between 18-22 pounds, are well balanced and have vibration dampening features. Used for breaking up concrete, block and stone, demo hammers need to be heavy duty but also versatile and light enough to work in a variety of positions and locations. Demolition hammers come with either an in-line body design or have the motor offset from the center; and a user-friendly bit changing system. Safe storage of 18+ pound demo hammers is crucial, most come with a heavy duty plastic case that also has room for extra bits.

Disc and Belt sanersDisc and belt sanders are combination machines used mainly in workshops for sanding woods, most plastics and non-ferrous metals. In a belt and disc sander look for features such as size of sanding discs and belts required, table tilting mechanism, HP of motor, ease of belt changing and whether the sander has belt tracking.

Disc sanderDisc sanders range in size from a 5" handheld sander for on-the-job to a 20", 3HP - 3 phase motor freestanding sander for the shop. Look for ease of disc changing, size of motor necessary for your type of work, ease of belt alignment, wrench storage and dust collection when purchase a disc sander.

Dovetail JointA joint where the fingers are shaped like a doves tail, used to join pieces at 90 degrees.

Dovetail machinesDovetail Machines either attach to a router or are industrial sized, self-contained Dovetailers designed to cut perfect dovetails for strong, decorative joints in drawers, boxes and cabinets. Also called a Dovetail Jig, look for a dovetail machine with machined aluminum templates, alignment lines, cam-type clamps and router bit depth stops. Accessories include dovetail bits, straight bits, template guides, and lock nuts.

drillA drill is a tool with a rotating bit used to bore holes into wood, metal, plastic and other materials.

drill driverDrills and Drivers are the most common tool purchased. Available in a variety of sizes and voltages, anyone from the DIYourselfer to the professional can find a decent, affordable drill/driver. Features to look for when purchasing a drill/driver include: voltage needed for your work, built-in light, weight and balance of the tool, bit storage on drill, easy bit changing and a storage case. Optional accessories for the drill/driver include: various types of drilling bits.

drill pressA Drill Press is used when the location and orientation of the hole must be controlled accurately. Used extensively in woodworking for furniture, cabinet and accessory making, drill presses are stationary tools that are either stand alone floor models (a base that supports a column) or benchtop models. A drill press can also be used to drill holes in metal, plastic and other materials depending upon the speed of the motor (variable speed) and the drill bits used. With the right attachments, a drill press can also be used as a spindle sander, mortise machine or pocket hole machine.

Drum sandersDrum sanders work to flatten, smooth, finish and polish. A drum sander is similar to a planer but eliminates the sniping on the ends of your finished stock. Features to look for in a drum sander include: ease of belt changing, dust collection, HP of motor and footprint.

Dual action sandersDual action sanders are used for feather edging, metal preparation and finish work on auto body filler. The sander features a dual action pad motion which produces swirl-free finishes. Look for a dual action sander that is quiet and has low vibration, balanced ball-bearing construction and an adjustable built-in regulator for positive speed control.

Dust bags and dust filtersDust Bags and dust filters are used to capture dust particles as they leave the source and/or float through the air. A good dust bag or dust filter will be easy to install and change out, will be made of a durable material that won't rip or tear easily (ie: from wood shards), and will be either washable or disposable. Some dust bags and dust filters will also feature chemical treatments applied to the filtration media which can considerably improve the media's performance, efficiency, and life expectancy.

Dust collectorsDust collectors consist of a motor, material handling blower, bag tree with collection bag, and a filter. There are two basic types of dust collectors: trashcan separators and cyclone separators. Dust collection is an important part of any woodworking shop because airborne wood dust and particulates have been found to cause a number of respiratory ailments.
