| Janka Test | The Janka hardness test is a measurement of the force necessary to embed a .444-inch steel ball to half its diameter in wood. It is the industry standard for gauging the ability of various species to tolerate denting and normal wear, as well as being a good indication of the effort required to either nail or saw the particular wood.

| Jig Saw | A power tool that cuts by moving a blade up and down as it is guided through the cut. Jigsaws and Scroll saws are power saws used for cutting thin boards, veneers, or plates into ornamental scrollwork; especially used for cutting curves. Features to look for include blades, blade storage drawers, location of control knobs and variable speed motor.

| Jointer | Jointer, not to be confused with a plate joiner, is a woodworking machine that creates a flat surface on one edge of a board. A jointer consists of a rotary cutting head with two or three blades in between two small flat tables called the infeed and outfeed. Look for a jointer with a spring loaded blade guard, adjustable fence, and easy to change cutting blades.
