Term Definition
Radial Arm SawCircular saw that runs on an overhead track, the track mechanism swings in relation to the table to make miter cuts. Radial Arm Saws are used to cut miters and bevels, cut dadoes and rabbets and also to rip stock. Features to look for include: blade guard with anti-kickback attachment, retractable leaf guard cutterhead return attachment, size and type of blade, cuttinghead clamp knob, adjustable crosscut stop, portability or table stand.

Radial Drill PressA drill press with the head mounted on a tube which is laterally and vertically adjustable, this type gives greater throat clearance but is not as solid as a conventional drill press so run out can be a problem.

Radiant HeatHeat that travels in waves and increases the temperature of objects that it encounters.  Examples of radiant heat systems include electric heat panels in ceilings, hot water tubes in floors, steam and hot water radiators, and fireplaces.

Random Orbit sanderRandom orbit sanders are used to strip paint off furniture, prepare new molding, clean up between finish coats, and smooth and clean metal and composite materials such as solid-surface countertops. Random orbit sanders have a unique double motion: the sandpaper disc spins in a circle while the whole pad moves in an oval loop which results in a swirl-free finish even when sanding across the grain. Random-orbits work more quickly than vibrating sanders but don't remove as much material. For that type of work see: belt sanders for flat surfaces, disc sanders for curved ones. When choosing a random-orbit sander, look for a motor size, body configuration, and pad size (5- or 6-inch) that fits your work. Be sure the random orbit sander you choose has a dust collection attachment option.

RatchetsRatchets are tools used to restrict movement in one directions while enabling it in the opposite. Features to look for in a ratchet include: easy change of direction while free-wheeling back plate allows application of steadying pressure without reversing and durable construction.

Rebar cuttersUsed mainly to cut rebar for concrete installation, rebar cutters can also be used to cut chain, locks and bolts. Tying tools are used to tie rebar 3-5 times faster than by hand. Features to look for in a rebar cutter include an ergonomic grip, easy replacement of shear blades, total control variable speed trigger, rotating head and a forward/reverse button.

Rechargeable batteriesRechargeable batteries come in three varieties of chemical compositions. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride), NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) and LiIon (various Lithium Ion technologies. The newest, lightest and longest lasting are made with Lithium. Some power tool manufacturers have made their new Lithium Ion Battery power tools backwards compatible with their older products and with others, you need to use the technology that matches what you have. If you are not sure which battery to purchase, check the manufacturers website.

Reciprocating sawReciprocating saws are used predominantly in construction and demolition work. A reciprocating saw's cutting action is achieved through the push and pull motion of it's blade. Look for a variable speed motor, oscillating action option, size of motor, location of trigger, types of blades and corded versus battery operated reciprocation saws. Also called sawsall, Sabre saw and recipro saw.

RosetteA circular or oval decorative wood piece used at the termination of a stair rail into a wall.

Rotary lasers and line lasersRotary lasers and line lasers are used for commercial and residential building applications. Rotary lasers are ideal for checking that foundations are level, shooting control lines so that windows and doors line up, installing wainscoting, setting kitchen cabinets, laying walls, installing decks, balustrades, and siding - all with only one person. Rotary lasers are also used to calculate plumb, level and square for walls, ceilings and roofs. Accessories for rotary and line lasers include carrying pouches, storage cases, receivers, wall brackets and target plates.

Router kitsRouter Kits include the router motor and base, collets, wrenches and a carrying case. Routers are used for fine groove cutting, chamfering, window cutting, trimming, shaping and cutting patterns.
