Term Definition
table sawHeavier and more powerful than their benchtop counterparts, a stationary table saw is the workhorse of any workshop. Features to look for in a table saw include cabinet and fence design, tilting blades, single-three phase motor, handwheel location, fan-cooled motor, vibration reduction design, blade alignment, precision and stability.
 
Thickness PlanerThe opposite of a jointer, a thickness planer has a flat base and a cutting head on the top. The material is fed with power rollers through the cutting blades to remove small amounts of material until you have two flat and parallel faces. Features to look for in a thickness planer include: spring-loaded feed rollers, cranks to adjust the thickness, depth of cut indicator, and an infeed/outfeed extension table.
 
TIG weldersTIG Welders are used by professionals and artisans for welding non-ferrous and thin materials such as: aluminum, stainless steel, copper and cosmetics. Look for a TIG welder that has sufficient Amperage for your work.
 
Toe KickBottom portion of a lower cabinet unit that is recessed to reduce damage from shoes and hide marring that occurs as shoes hit against the finished material.
 
Tongue and GrooveType of edge often found on materials to be used for SHEATHING, each panel has one long edge with a tongue and the other long edge with a corresponding groove.  The tongue of one sheet will fit into the groove of the next sheet to form a seam or joint.  This produces a much stronger joint than placing two square edges together.
 
Transit levelsTransit levels are used primarily for surveying. Look for a transit level that has a built-in sunshade to reduce sun glare, high precision glass level vials, sliding lock levers and a high quality telescope.
 
Trim RoutersTraditionally geared for use exclusively with laminate countertops, trim routers are versatile for small chiseling and routing jobs where accuracy and precision are required. Also called laminate trimmers, look for a good case, simplicity, and convenience of tool operation. Other features of trim routers include quick bit switch-out, easy and accurate fence adjustments and solid, well-machined bases.
 
TrowelTool with a flat surface, used to finish the concrete surface or spread mortar for tile.  Usually the last tool used to smooth the concrete surface.  Should be used after the CONCRETE has lost its WEEP MOISTURE but before it loses all of its PLASTICITY.
 
TrussStructural part used to provide the primary support for the floor or roof SHEATHING.  A roof truss system, including the trusses, sheathing, bracing and fasteners also provides support for the tops of the exterior bearing walls.
