The material is fed with power rollers through the cutting blades to remove small amounts of material until you have two flat and parallel faces. Features to look for in a thickness planer include: spring-loaded feed rollers, cranks to adjust the thickness, depth of cut indicator, and an infeed/outfeed extension table.
