This beautiful home in West Falls, NY had an icey problem. Due to the way the chimney and the roof lines matched up, the long, snowy Buffalo winters would cause 'ice traps' to form on these ridgelines. The ice buildup would ultimately melt and leak into the house. Even though the roof was only two years old, this caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to the interior of the house.
Joe P. of American Builders set out to fix the problem. Here's how:
Building 'roof steps' they installed copper flashing along the chimney. |
They also installed copper flashing along the edges where the roof lines met. The DeWalt radio/charger was a necessary accessory. |
The copper flashing was to facilitate snow melt along the edges where the ice had previously been contained. |
They used a circular template to cut holes in the roof where the power vents were to be installed. |
Power vents. |
Power vents were installed in the upper attic to vent the heat in summer and moisture in the winter. |
Tar paper is laid down before the copper sheeting is installed. |
Copper sheeting is installed on the side of the house under the eaves in the main ice trap area. |
 |
Battery operated power tools are used wherever possible. |
Copper pans are welded together before being installed on roof. This will elimate any leaking. |

The finishing touches... |
Copper pans were installed on the lower 3 foot portion of the roof to facilitate snow melt. |
